There’s a shark in my house

Monday, 19 April 2010 (9:56 am) Steve No comments

The Divine Miss P, despite being only 3 1/2 years old, is an absolute KILLER when it comes to the card game “Crazy 8s.” She gets confused about the suits sometimes, she has NO concept behind the strategies for using the “8″ cards, she even shows her hand regularly… and she wins over, and over, and [...]

And the water ran orange with their blood

Wednesday, 28 October 2009 (12:00 pm) Steve No comments

Last night was the annual pumpkin-carving fiesta, where we joyfully assaulted helpless gourds (gourds that were stolen away from their friends and loved ones weeks ago) with saws and body scrapers, gutting them and then displaying their mutilated remains for our neighbors to enjoy. To add to the overall gruesomeness, we even added flames to [...]

How much cuteness can you handle?

Saturday, 22 December 2007 (11:55 am) Steve No comments

My youngest daughter, who’s a bit more than a year old, has turned into some kind of “kissing bandit” of late. She’ll smooch anybody who’ll hold still long enough. She practically makes out with the cat. As you might expect, a puckered-up smoocheroo from my little angel frequently gets a syrupy ”Awww…!” reaction from the target [...]

The little things, part 2

Thursday, 6 December 2007 (1:48 pm) Steve No comments

As the designated “night owl” in my house—heck, even the cat tends to snore his way through the night—it falls to me to check that everyone’s snuggled tight into their beds. In the case of daughter #1, this means rearranging whatever chaotic mess she’s created out of her sheets, blanket, and assorted stuffed animals. I [...]

Beware the unburped baby

Thursday, 8 November 2007 (1:31 pm) Steve No comments

Early this morning, my wife collected our youngest from her crib and brought her back to bed with a bottle. We snuggled into the warmth of our bed, the baby happily downing 6 ounces of milk, and all was right in the world. Upon finishing the bottle, she snuggled her way over to me (it’s [...]

One in a row!

Friday, 5 October 2007 (1:12 pm) Steve No comments

Finally, FINALLY… Child #2 slept through the night for the first time. Well, technically the second time (there was that one glorious night several months ago), but the first time she woke up and got herself back to sleep. And only after a bit more than 13 months of depriving her parents of much-needed sleep. [...]

My daughter Peyton busts a gut

Video entry this time. I gotta figure out how to make part of this into a ringtone for my phone.

Where did this octopus come from?

Tuesday, 5 June 2007 (12:02 pm) Steve No comments

Getting our youngest ready for “school” this morning, I was struck by the somewhat-obvious observation that babies are much easier to dress when they’re not old enough to have their own agendas.

Blast from the past

Wednesday, 18 April 2007 (8:03 pm) Steve No comments

My daughter (she’s 4) saw either the movie “Madagascar” or a clip from it at school recently, and ever since then she’s been singing & dancing to the song “I Like To Move It” as performed in the movie. The first time she did it, I flashed back to… 10? years ago, when I used [...]

This is progress?

Monday, 8 May 2006 (12:16 pm) Steve No comments

After years of training, I now have a cat that’s so unconcerned by the vacuum cleaner that he can’t be bothered to shift his furry self when he’s in the way, and a 3 year-old that runs from the room with her hands over her ears whenever you turn the (admittedly loud) vacuum on.

Girl’s got some manners

Saturday, 8 April 2006 (2:35 pm) Steve No comments

After dinner last night, my daughter (she’s 3) and I went out for a stroll through the neighborhood. As we walked, the sound of frogs got louder and louder until we came to one of those water drainage ponds, where what sounded like several hundred frogs were raising quite a racket. (How the people who [...]

Outthunk by a 3 year-old

Monday, 27 March 2006 (10:28 am) Steve No comments

Every once in a while, while I’m telling my daughter how I’d like her to do something, she’ll make a suggestion that’s a better way of doing at least part of it. I don’t know which one of us that says more about, but I find it alternately cool, disturbing, and embarassing. True, parents are [...]

Name that tune!

Friday, 10 February 2006 (1:08 pm) Steve No comments

[Well, okay, it's actually "name these lyrics," but that doesn't have the same pizzazz.] Well it’s a sunny day; I feel brand-new. There’s about a million things That I could do!Whoa-oh-oh. Would you like to do them, too? (Yeah.) Well, it’s a big, wide world and it’s waitin’ for me and you! Let’s look around. [...]

Saving Private Ryan’s mom

Friday, 11 November 2005 (8:51 pm) Steve No comments

As they’ve done every year for… well, a while now, the TNT channel is showing Saving Private Ryan (personally, I think they should also show Private York, Porkchop Hill, Hamburger Hill and/or Platoon, Blackhawk Down, etc.) in honor of Veterans Day (or Remembrance Day, for those of you in Canada). I was watching it tonight [...]
