I've always liked living in the forests and mountains of Western Washington (Hey, I even like the rain!), so I was more than a little surprised by how the desert affected me. Of course, seeing it from an air-conditioned car is a bit different than from the back of a horse in the 1800's, I expect.

Taken from the passenger side of the trusty Neon on the way back to Phoenix. Flat! |
Take away the cars and freeway, throw in some beleaguered settlers and attacking "Indians," and you've got yourself a John Ford movie! |
Taken from the parking lot at Colossal Cave. |
Ooooh, cactus! |
I'm not big on landscape photos, but I really liked this. Don't ask me why... |
Some of the same cacti, up close. |
Guess... |
This is from the entrance to Colossal Cave, looking back up to the parking lot. It's too bad my camera sucks... this picture doesn't remotely do the scene justice. |
Taken at Pima the day before we went to Colossal Cave. My first real good look at a cactus. |
Even I think this is pretty. If you look to the left of the saguaro's base, you'll see our friend the red ground squirrel. |
This is a schlocky panorama I took from the parking lot at Colossal Cave. It really drives home the point that you're in the middle of nowhere. |
Our new buddy the ground squirrel. Apparently, pigeons can't take the heat... |
Here he is, sneaking in from the desert to camp out under the picnic tables. |
Here he (she?) is again. |
This is where our pal settled in to mooch french fries. Obviously they're used to this, 'cause he came up and took one right out of my hand. |
This seems like an effective method for hiding from high-flying raptors. Hard to see, even with the circle. |
Ground squirrel! |
Uh-oh... looks like we've got a little competition. |
A close-up of our buddy hiding next to a saguaro cactus. |
